I know people who love to drive. I can understand that. That sense of power and motion, of eating up the miles, of seeing new landscapes from behind glass while some track plays on the stereo…
The Green Guy wrote a nice piece for The Guardian last week on using “smart meters” to shave un-needed watts off your electricity use.
Here in relatively eco-conscious Brighton, the smart meter seems to have created a whole new fun-for-all-the-family type game…

I think you have to admire the musicians who’ve put their names to Live Earth. It’s not so much the committment to playing at a humungously huge world-wide gig. A twenty-minute set is hardly going to kill them. It’s the fact that by appearing there they’re opening themselves up - for the rest of their careers - to charges of hypocrisy…

The only dent in an otherwise beautiful Easter weekend was someone nicking my bike from outside my flat.
Now, anyone who knows me knows I’m all in favour of recycling, but not that kind.
But even that was unable to dent my mood. Yesterday - on a borrowed bike…
There’s an excellent article by Jonathan Watts and Jess Cartner-Morley on the complex economy of the humble plastic bag in The Guardian.
“The apparent intractability of the plastic bag problem is all the more remarkable considering that our dependency on them is a recent phenomenon. Polythene was not even invented until the 30s, and plastic bags did not become common in supermarkets…
