Sustrans says: Change Your World
Tuesday, June 29th, 2010 by NigelNigel’s HQ is only a mile or so from home and I’m really enjoying cycling to work to work at the moment. The sun is shining, the sky is blue, and I find biking to work a great way to get energised for the day ahead. We’re lucky in Brighton and Hove, as there is an excellent network of cycle paths, which means that the trip to work is not too much of a white knuckle ride, and I’m not dodging lorries and people carriers.
So, I’m 100% behind Sustrans’ Change Your World Campaign, now in its second and last week. Sustrans aims to help us enjoy the benefits of cycling, walking or taking public transport. They have created over 12,000 miles of walking and cycling routes and work with schools, families and business to encourage people to get out the car and travel by foot, bike or public transport.
At the moment only 2 out of every 5 local journeys are made sustainably. Sustrans’ aim to increase this amount to 4 out of 5 local journeys, by fund-raising and lobbying the government to put more money into creating a sustainable transport network.
The health benefits of cycling are enormous, and less journeys made by car help cut back on carbon emissions and pollution. So why sit in a traffic jam when you could sail from A to B along a regenerated canal path, sea front cycle route or wooded track.
With more funding put into creating safe cycle paths, many of us would ditch the car in favour fresh air, increased energy levels and general joie de vivre. So why not make the most of the weather and get on your bike. Check out the online mapping tool to find your local cycle route.
