Do The Green Thing - Help Choose Sustainability’s Next Top Model

Do The Green Thing have an excellent competition on their blog where you can vote for your favourite out of four innovative new products, all designed to help save energy and reduce waste.

  • LFLECT lace by Lost Values: pretty reflective lace for cyclists to stitch to their clothes to make them visible at night. Cuts down on buying new stuff, and is made in the UK.
  • Makedo: kids always prefer playing with the box than the toy anyway, this cunning idea capitalises on that fact with some clever connectors, hinges and other bits and bobs to transform waste packaging into toys. Check out the video, its amazing!
  • Sugru: mouldable stuff for repairs, fixes and hacks. It’s hard to explain, but it looks really useful - allowing you to either repair broken items, or improve them as you see fit. Watch the video; they do a better job of explaining it than I can.
  • Woolfiller: I’m not the best with a needle and thread, but repairing (rather than replacing) is definitely the better solution: this product repairs holes in wool garments with no need for stitches! Genius.

I’m hard pressed to pick one of these products as they are all inspired. Cast your vote for the chance to win all four products, and the winning company will get a promotion campaign from Do The Green Thing worth a whopping 50K,  a great helping hand for an innovative eco start-up.

I’m a big fan of the folks over at Do The Green Thing, a brilliant organisation dedicated to getting us to do just seven things to reduce our impact on the earth: walk, don’t fly, stop wasting, eat less meat, turn the heating down, don’t leave things on standby, and stop needlessly upgrading gadgets. It’s a wonderfully simple message, and they break it down in a way that makes you realise that these energy saving choices are actually really easy.

There’s lots of hilarious and thought-provoking videos and audio - check it out!
