Turn Off Your Shop Lights at Night, Please
Friday, April 9th, 2010 by NigelIt’s 5am and I’m walking to work (don’t ask). It’s a 15 minute walk. It’s still dark, and I notice that perhaps 40% of shops have lights on, including a local Iceland that has all it’s lights on.
And I’m thinking, if my local streets are representative of the whole country, then £millions worth of energy and CO2 is being wasted lighting shops when no one is there, and no one is shopping or even looking through the window. At 5am, no one is around (I now know that for a fact).
The shops might be wasting their own money on lighting, but at the end of the day, it’s all of us that are picking up the bill.
I feel the urge to start a ‘Turn Shop Lights Off at Night’ campaign. So I have.
Here’s the plan - let’s name and shame em.
Post pictures of your local shops that have lights on at night to Facebook or Flickr, (saying where they are) and hopefully we can ‘encourage’ them to turn them off.

I so thoroughly agree! There really should be some legislation to control this total abuse of our world’s resources. No doubt, shop owners say that they do it for window shoppers, to make their presence felt 24/7, for security - they’ll always find excuses.
On the back of trucks, you sometimes see a phone number to ring to praise or complain about that driver or service - there should be a number to report such un-environmental behaviour!

I have been so depressed recently about the state of the planet and our government’s unwillingness to introduce serious measures for reducing our emissions. Shop lights has really annoyed me for a long time. Surely the government can say ‘no lights when you’re not open or you get fined’. At a time when companies should be saving money instead of laying off staff it makes no sense. I’m so disillusioned that I don’t think even a brick through their windows would do the job.
Have you had any luck with this over the past year? I came by this link as I am thinking about setting up my own campaign.

The idea being that anyone can add pictures of offending shops! Do join and post some pics if you feel the urge
