2009: The Energy Revolution Starts Here
Tuesday, January 6th, 2009 by NigelHappy New Year! 2009 is due to be a huge year, as Obama takes office, and the world figures out how to deal with the economic and climate crises.
For me, 2008 ended on an inspiring note at least. On New Year’s Eve, the Today programme on Radio 4 allowed guest editor Jarvis Cocker (formerly of Pulp) to mess with the usual format. Part of his show - along with chatting with rugby hero Jonny Wilkinson about quantum physics, and a mystery guest that had presenter Evan Davis feeling decidedly nervous - was an interview with Lord Stern, author of the Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change.
Stern, an eminent economist, said the climate crisis will be bigger than the economic crisis, but he felt there was cause for optimism. Here’s a very edited summary of what he says we need to learn from the credit crisis, in order to fix the climate situation:
1. We can’t let things fester: the longer we leave it, the bigger the problem.
2. We need to work together: government intervention is needed and it needs to be on a global scale.
3. This is a real opportunity… the energy revolution starts here.

Hey I just wanted to let you know, I actually like the written material on your site. But I am utilising Flock on a machine running version 9.04 of Ubuntu and the UI aren’t quite kosh er. Not a strong deal, I can still fundamentally read the articles and search for info, but just wanted to inform you about that. The navigation bar is kind of challenging to apply with the config I’m running. Keep up the superb work!
