A Pineapple in the Garden of Eden
Friday, October 10th, 2008 by Nigel
Last weekend I went to the Eden Project in Cornwall. Wow, what a treat. Ten years ago the site was an exhausted and barren china clay pit. Today it is a thriving ecosystem and home to the unmissable biomes. The Rainforest Biome is the world’s largest greenhouse covering 3.9 acres and inside I discovered that pineapples don’t grow on trees. Who knew they sprout from the ground in bushes?
The Eden Project is all about environmental education, highlighting the interdependence of plants and people, but there is nothing preachy about it. Storytelling, exhibitions, workshops and even WEEE man, who is currently in residence, all make it an excellent day out.
It’s also worth noting that entry is normally £15, but if instead you donate £15 to the Eden trust charity and gift aid it, they’ll give you a whole year’s free entry!
