Nigel’s Green Web Awards - coming soon

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008 by Nigel

The other day I came across Tracy Stokes’ post on EcoStreet.com 2008’s Best Green Websites. She was talking about the real lack of green sites making it onto prominent ‘best of the web’ lists - which is quite a surprising oversight given the rapid rise in the number of green websites out there, and also the amount of media coverage of green issues and climate change, especially this year.

You could say it’s because maybe green is a virtual ghetto; you could say it’s because maybe green websites aren’t yet good enough quality. I don’t believe either. The number of hits this site alone gets suggests there is a massive audience out there looking for content on this topic.

Anyway, it was good to read that Tracy Stokes was thinking along these lines because here at Nigel’s Eco store we’re just about to launch Nigel’s Green Web Awards, to draw attention to the best of the green web. Our aim is not just to reward the sites with the biggest budgets, but to find websites that are hidden gems, community-based sites and ones that make use of the power of the internet.

The way we’re running the awards is to collect the opinions of about 20 to 30 leading Green bloggers and experts on their favourite Green and Eco sites on the web, in a number of different categories.

We aim to offer a valuable reference that will not only remain on our site and be updated yearly but also be promoted externally on social networks such as Digg and Stumbleupon. Ultimately, we aim to build an alternative to the standard ‘best of the web’ awards and draw more attention to the fact that green matters! I’ll keep you posted on more soon…

Thanks to ecstaticist for the very literal green web illustration.

    Hi Nigel,

Great idea to implement the Green Web Awards. The internet is such a powerful tool for creating a better, greener world and lends itself so well to grassroots movements like the green movement, it is strange that green sites have not really featured strongly so far…..but that is changing and awards like this will help raise the bar for everybody and provide inspiration….and congratulations on your own award!

    Hi
what a wonderful idea! I was recently up for a local (Bristol) Sustainable Business Award…the other finalists in the category where a huge building company who are currently building a monstrosity of a shopping centre in the city centre (sustainable how???)and a removal company that used bio fuel - these guys won which i prefer to the shopping centre winning!
I was the only small business in the running which was a huge achievement but I did feel the ’sustainable’ category needed to be aimed a bit greener than it was!

What a great idea - there’s one site that comes to mind immediately, which is junkk.com, which has stacks of ideas of how to reuse things you’d otherwise put in the bin - I’ve found it really handy for ways to reuse packaging, which I hate to put in the bin (and often can’t be recycled). It’s also a really good site for getting an unbiased objective view of green news and current affairs, and there’s a forum too. I’d love to nominate them for an award - how do I go about doing so?

    Alternative Fuel Saving Devices…

I couldn’t understand some parts of this article, but I guess I just need to check some more resources regarding this, because it sounds interesting….
