My eco family

I’ve just come back from an annual family gathering. My grandfather was one of five brothers, so there are a lot of relatives: fifty of us turn up at the local tennis club and there’s lots of energy in the room. Buffet style food, kids running round, faces new and old, and co-operative good will over clearing up. Lots of chit chat about what’s new since last year, children, football, business… A cousin is dating Rachel Stevens from S-Club, she happily signs autographs.

Another cousin is working for BTCV on inner city garden and conservation projects in his university work placement year, and since I last saw him has become a vegan and very eco minded. His father, my uncle, says his son is making them think more about the environment, and tells me excitedly about the wind up radios they bought, his mother about the eco balls and dryer balls that they love. “We keep losing one of the dryer balls in the sheets,” she smiles, adding “they’re very good.”

Yet another cousin – a corporate whizz - says many of his friends want to start eco businesses.

The last time I made the gathering, thinking eco was not on anyone’s radar, seems like some of my family are turning onto it.
