I’m Not a Paper Cup
Wednesday, April 16th, 2008 by NigelYou know when you get something new, and you suddenly notice that they’re everywhere? A few days ago I went to the Natural Products Show at London’s Olympia on the hunt for new eco products. It was a successful trip and I found some great new things that’ll be appearing on the site any day now.
Strangely, the thing that struck me most at the show was the number of coffees being drunk out of paper cups. An odd thing for me to notice, but then we’ve just added the great ‘I’m Not a Paper Cup’, so I guess it’s on my mind. With echoes of Anya Hindmarch’s bag, it’s a ceramic thermal mug with a re-sealable lid so you can take away hot drinks and keep them warm, and keep them from spilling.
From a distance it looks like a paper cup - hence the name - closer inspection reveals it’s a witty and eco friendly alternative to all those unnecessary paper cups given out by coffee shops.
In a moment of inspiration, I did a quick bit of research and read that an astounding 31 billion cups of coffee are drunk in the UK every year - not all of those are takeaway coffees, but a pretty huge number will be, and a lot of cups are going to end up on a rubbish heap.
Designed across the pond, where taking your own mug/flask to a coffee shop to pick up a coffee on the way to work is more commonplace, I’m Not a Paper Cup is not a bag, but maybe it needs to catch on like one.
