Sexy green?

OK, who needs to be serious all the time, but really… Do we need The Huffington Post’s “7 Sexiest Green Celebs of 2007″? Say hello to the usual suspects from Cheryl C. to Brad P..
Worst of all, one of them is Al Gore. I think we’re going to have to seriously retool the definition of “sexiest”. OK, maybe it’s an attack of winter churlishness, and they’re all fine and admirable sorts, I know, but I just think there’s got to be some better poster people for the green movement that this lot. Don’t you think? All suggestions welcome.
Meanwhile, on the rather less-than-sexy front, I came across this article on National Geographic’s site the darker side of e-waste recycling in the third world:
Dozens of indistinct figures move among the acrid haze, some stirring flames with sticks, others carrying armfuls of brightly colored computer wire. Most are children.
Choking, I pull my shirt over my nose and approach a boy of about 15, his thin frame wreathed in smoke. Karim says he has been tending such fires for two years. He pokes at one meditatively, and then his top half disappears as he bends into the billowing soot. He hoists a tangle of copper wire off the old tire he’s using for fuel and douses the hissing mass in a puddle. With the flame retardant insulation burned away—a process that has released a bouquet of carcinogens and other toxics—the wire may fetch a dollar from a scrap-metal buyer.
In our understandable eagerness to recycle, we may be missing just a few checks and balances still, it seems. Still, I guess we can leave that for “sexy” green celeb Sienna Miller to sort out, then? No, honestly… I like her and admire her green clothing range.
