Rewired

Thursday, December 13th, 2007 by Nigel

Trawling the web, I see The Daily Green suggests we all switch back to corded phones… remember them? Now this strikes me as a good idea. Cordless phones, they say, are energy vampires. Plus there’s nothing more frustrating than being in a house on fire and discovering your DECT phone battery has gone flat. Besides, for me the big advantage with corded phones is that you usually know where to find the ruddy thing. It is firmly tethered. A domestic animal, unlike the feral cordless one which escapes to live under cushions.

I see the Guardian have launched a new weekly podcast, Environment Weekly, hosted by Alison Benjamin. The first program is available here, featuring a discussion on Bali, plus why you shouldn’t wear cashmere by Lucy Siegle. And pretty good it is too…

It was that podcast which let me know about chooseday.org, an entertaining site which is trying to persuade everyone to give up driving on Tuesdays.

Going one step further than chooseday.org, Aaron Newton at Groovy Green has come up with an ingenious idea for instantly cutting carbon emissions by up to 20%. Introduce the 4-day week. With Nigel’s Eco Store in full December overdrive, I can only wish…

Meanwhile, this advert has been doing the rounds on YouTube. I have no idea what it’s saying, but it might be something about the consequences of global warming in the Arctic:

Thanks to massdistraction for the phone photo.
