Eco Player

Stephen Fry has been enthusing wildy in his Guardian column “Dork Talk” about the Eco Media Player, comparing it favourably to the Phillips Streamium:

There is something about this adorable device that makes me smile, and keep smiling. The difference between it and the Streamium says a lot about the crucial emotional reciprocity between manufacturer and consumer of which one is aware the moment one opens the packaging. One product gives off an air of corporate indifference and separation from the human world, the other a sense of wanting to please, of wanting to love and be loved.

Chunky, rubber-skinned and round-cornered, the Eco Player’s dimensions make it thicker than the mainstream generation of players, but then it has to house the famous Baylis crank. For all that, it feels lighter than a packet of cigarettes… Its most obviously innovative feature is that whatever you have eaten that morning will power it - calorie-fuelled charge of one minute via the wind-up handle provides 40 minutes of audio play.

The man who owns the second-ever Mac sold in Europe and is not ashamed to boast of it, has finally found a device which he enjoys as much - or possibly more than - the Apple equivalent. You can also read the piece on Stephen Fry’s fine blog.

Meanwhile, thanks to Jane for sending in a link to greenhostingreviews.com, a site which reviews web hosts on their green credentials. As yet it just reviews a handful - including the one the site uses. As there are quite a number of green web hosts now - like Athaneum and GreenWebHost here in the UK who both use renewable power sources, it would be great to see a site that compares a wide number of hosts not only by how green they are, but also on how good a service they provide. Just a thought.
