Gwapple me gwape nuts, it’s David Bellamy

I realise that there’s already a generation younger than myself who wouldn’t have a clue where that headline was culled from. For them, that’s David Bellamy visiting Nigel’s Eco Store when I was running a stand at The Sustainability Show last month. (OK. I’m the one without the beard.)

In keeping with the theme of the trade fair, every stallholder there purchased offsets. David came round to offer us a certificate of trees planted - signed by him. He seemed quite keen on the Eco Kettle…

I’d met him before once eight years, when I was running a local ethical magazine, at an environmental summit at Disneyland Paris, of all places. He was facilitating a session for UK children who were thinking up creative ways to save the environment… and was really good at getting them going.

He’s a controversial figure in the environmental movement - apt to say things that get people’s backs up - like climate change isn’t happening. (He’s backed down on that one). And he’s definitely not as hairy as I remember him. But, let’s face it, he did inspire a lot of people, back in the days when they let him on TV.

I was a massive fan of David Bellamy when I was a kid, and remember that Bellamy episode on the Goodies. I was a bit disappointed when he claimed global warming as “poppycock” though.

Wikipedia cites “In May 2007 Bellamy and Jack Barrett jointly authored a paper in the refereed Civil Engineering journal of the Institution of Civil Engineers entitled ‘Climate stability: an inconvenient proof’.”

So what’s the go? Did you discuss his position with him? What’s his opinion now, given his strong and recent skepticism?
