DIY biofuels…
Friday, July 27th, 2007 by NigelI had a great comment a few days ago from Claire, who had set up the car-sharing site Freewheelers with her partner about 15 years ago, and I thought it worth turning some of her comment into a post.
They sold the business and now have three kids, so car-sharing is less of an option. Instead, they run two VWs on biolfuel sold to them by Goldenfuels in Oxford. Goldenfuels will even make you your own biofuel reactor to produce your own diesel out of used cooking oil, should you wish it.
As long as you accept that cutting down the miles is still the best answer, it’s not a bad way to reduce your carbon footprint.
Here in Brighton, Magpie - the recycling people - will sell you biodiesel too. At 95p a litre it’s locally manufactured from reused cooking oil. I like their own disclaimer on the site:
We??€re also aware that Bio fuels do not represent a complete solution. The best figures suggest that the UK will only be able to produce around 5% of it??€s fuel needs through agriculture and waste cooking oil. It??€s obvious that we need to change our relationship with fuel in order to make substantial reductions in greenhouse gasses.
If you??€re still not sure about Bio diesel, we offer a large range of reconditioned, low cost bicycles at our Shabitat depot!
