Good Carbon Footprint calculators: part 2
Wednesday, July 25th, 2007 by Nigel
OK… here we go again.
What is it? I’m guessing this is an older carbon footprint calculator from the carbon auditing company Best Foot Forward.
Is it easy to use? Yes… a bit too easy, actually. The questions it asks are too simple to be useful. Do you live in a large house? Or a medium size house? They’re too broad to make a decent calculation from.
How accurate is it? See above. Not very. My own carbon footprint came out very low - lower than I think it really is. The public online calculator seems to have been a little left behind by their new one, Footprinter.com. Footprinter is a commercial application designed to be used as a business carbon footprint calculator. It’s been featured on BBC news. There is a public version of Footprinter available here. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to work. I tried it on Firefox and Safari for Mac and there was an issue with Flash on both browsers; and even reinstalling the software I couldn’t get it to work. Gah.
What is it? Resurgence has been around a long time. It’s a magazine that comes from an alternative perspective, both spiritually and politically.
Is it easy to use? Don’t think that because Resurgence is a holistic-lifestyle magazine that there’s anything airy fairy about this carbon footprint calculator. It’s not for the faint hearted. This has one of the best range of categories you’ll find on the net. It’s no use if you want a quick thumbnail picture of your carbon footprint; this will have you going through your quarterly bills and receipts for accurate figures for bottled gas, train journeys, plane journeys, coal, wood and food consumption.
How accurate is it? I’m no expert, but this looks like one of the very best calculators you can find online - if you’ve got the patience to use it… and if you’re the sort of person who keeps all your annual records.
