As you are likely finding, the current calculators on the web are fairly gross calculations of the average carbon usage. There needs to be a more methodological and easy to use solution for consumers. EcoSynergy, my new company, is building a business to develop the standard for how manufacturers and retailers measure and calculate the emissions of their products, how they use that information for sustainability reporting and how that information is communicated on product labels and store shelves. While we will be selling a subscription service to Consumer Product Manufacturers, Retailers and Food Producers there will also be a consumer version of this calculator that will be available within the next few weeks.

Our goal is the give the manufacturers the most accurate way to calculate, measure and label their products using a transparent methodology--not some secret approach that keeps the market wondering whether this is real. We have enough of that already in the carbon offset market. We expect that this will give customers the ability to make informed decisions on how to lower and improve the carbon footprint for the products and services they buy. Our site will be live in the next week and the consumer calculator shortly after that (www.ecosynergyinc.com). In the meantime, you can contact me directly at andy@ecosynergyinc.com.
