The Carbon Footprint Calculator calculator

Monday, July 2nd, 2007 by Nigel

There was a really interesting survey published in The Guardian a few days ago about trust and green issues. It’s a wake-up call to anyone who lives in a green ghetto and thinks that everybody gets what the problems are. There’s a lot of distrust about business and the claims it makes, and many don’t know where to turn for good info. A third of consumers are confused and don’t know what they can do.

The future is going to be about good information - and how it can be made useful. That’s why there are so many carbon footprint calculators around now.

I first did my own carbon audit last year and was a little taken aback by what I found - but it made me reassess my lifestyle. And I mentioned DEFRA’s new one the other day.

There are now dozens to try:

Carbonfootprint.com

Carbon Calculator

Best Foot Forward

Resurgence

The Carbon Neutral Company

My Carbon Footprint

C Level

Style Will Save Us

FoodCarbon

BP’s calculator

Zerofootprint

Safeclimate

Some are specific to certain areas of our lives - like our food, or our car use. All have their own agendas - their own algorithms and yard sticks. Are they creating a new fog of facts? Are they reliable?

I’ve an idea. Over the next few weeks I’m going to try them out, one at a time. I’ll let you know how easy they are to use for an average user like me. I may even persuade a couple of friends to help me.

If any of you have any experience of using them, or any views on which ones work best for you, or which are the most reliable, please pass them on.

Please consider reviewing the carbon calculator we have just set up on our site. Our carbon calculator is designed to drive awareness of how many trees are required to offset your carbon emissions. We have created it for ease of use and also to cover different types of energy units, since different countries use different units. This will also help us improve the next version.
