More bottle thoughts…

Thursday, June 28th, 2007 by Nigel

I see that readers of Lucy Siegle’s article “Is this the end of the milk bottle” have reacted pretty much the same way as I did. Returnable glass bottles are by far the least wasteful way to go.

Until the 1970s, pretty much all bottles were recyclable. There was a return fee on all bottles and kids would scour the neighbourhood picking up discarded empties.

That all changed. The very first Friends of The Earth campaign was an attempt to persuade Schweppes not to make their bottles disposable. People brought carloads of empties and dumped them outside their offices. It didn’t work, mind you… which is why we’ve ended with such large piles of glass in our recycling bins these days.

(Of course if you’re looking for nice recycling bins, look no further…)

How do you get back to where you were thirty years ago?
