More plastic in the sea than plankton
Wednesday, May 16th, 2007 by Nigel
This week is the last chance to see Lou McCurdy’s exhibition More Plastic Than Plankton in Brighton. McCurdy is an artist who spent a year collecting plastic flotsam from the beach near Shoreham Power Station. Out of the pieces, she has created a collection of strange creature-like objects.
The sorry fact is that the amount of plastic in the sea - by weight - is now several times greater than the amount of plankton. Lou also mentions that scientists have discovered a three-million tonne mass of plastic debris the size of Texas floating in the North Pacific. It forms a giant floating island of plastic.
There are some facts you hear which leave a hard lump in your stomach. That’s one of them.

Hi Nigel,
thanks a little bit late for your thoughts on my exhibition.
William Shaw my mate and neighbour on our walking bus (stanford crocodile.org) this morning thought you would be interested in an enviromental screening event at the Duke of yorks 2 Feb. Its of the BBC Hawaii film that Rebecca Hoskins showed to the good people of modbury! I will be there with new works and also we are showing a childrens film I was involved with all about plastic bags. the sea and an interview with Norman Cook.
It is an event that has been put together by plasticbagfreebrighton.co.uk The coop are giving away cloth goodie bags and hopefully the Marine Conservation Society will be there. All in all a jolly exciting free event..
I hope to hear from you,
Lou
