Biofuels: saving the planet, or not?

Bioful

Agribusiness doesn’t have the greatest record in protecting the environment; it’s curious so many people are thinking it’s going to save the planet now. But anyone still convinced that biofuels are going to be a quick eco fix should take a look at George Monbiot’s article in Tuesday’s Guardian.

Q. Are biofuels about saving the planet, or about saving agribusiness?

One Response to “Biofuels: saving the planet, or not?”

  1. Mike Says:

Why is it agriculture and farming is always cast as the villain, those involved in the industry respond, like the rest of society, to rules, regulations and directions dictated by Government policy. As we all know this is usually dictated by short term views on the voting position of the electorate. Biofuels from food crops is just one example of this short term, mis-guided reaction to a long term problem. If you create a market someone will supply it, the politicians do see this as being a vote catching solution to the oil dependant culture but please, please, blame the politicians not the industry that at least is trying to help in providing a partial solution to the energy crisis. Next generation biofuels obtained from non food crops and biomass offer a real opportunity to reduce CO2 emissions it would be a pity to tar all biofuels ( excuse the pun )from the agricultural industry with the same brush.
