Nigel’s green weddings
Tuesday, March 27th, 2007 by NigelAnyone who listens to BBC Radio 4 (and I appreciate that will not necessarily be lots of you… but bear with me here) will know that Nigel Pargiter of the long-runing radio soap The Archers has gone green, much to the exasperation his frightful wife Lizzie. He’s ditched his car, and decided to buy only local produce for his conference centre, Lower Loxley Hall. His latest wheeze is eco weddings.
What a fascinating glimpse into middle England this is. Not so much the radio programme itself, as the BBC Archers message board, where several listeners are in a froth about Nigel’s conversion to the cause. They’re just as bad at the fansite Archer’s Addicts, only in a more politely English way.
Typical of Archers Addicts, is “Ella” who complains: “I don’t know about the rest of you but I’m get really cheesed off with having ‘green’ issues shoved at me, not just on The Archers but everywhere else!!”
My complaint is that Nigel Pargiter is hardly the best poster boy for eco-business. He not only has he given a bad rep to the fine name of Nigel down the years, he inevitably will end up besmirching the whole notion of “eco”. A toff of the toffer-most type, he is a classic Toad of Toad Hall like blunderer, first emerging on the Archers as a failing ice-cream salesman, Mr Whippy.
With Nigel P it’s all bound to go wrong somewhere.
But I see that the concept of eco weddings already has a non-virtual life outside of Borsetshire.
