Greening Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is worryingly close. Should I send organic flowers? Or Fairtrade ones? What a dilemma. At least there’s a choice these days.

If the rampant commercialism of Mother’s Day makes you shudder, spare a thought for Anna Jarvis, the American woman who campaigned successfully to get Mother’s Day introduced there. She created a monster. Nine years after the first offical American Mother’s Day, she went into reverse and started campaigning for its abolition on the grounds that it had become a festival of mawkishness and spending, rather than of motherhood. In particular she loathed Mother’s Day cards, considering them, “a poor excuse for the letter you are too lazy to write.”

Cough. Well. Looks guiltily at feet. If I send her a recycled card, does that make it any better?
