Green beans
Monday, February 26th, 2007 by NigelIn this morning’s Daily Telegraph, a story about Labour Environment Secretary David Miliband apparently considering green labels for food which display the amount of greenhouse gasses created when transporting the food. It’s a great idea if only to open up the whole debate about food miles, which blogger Ethan Zuckerman writes about so well here. Food exports are about the only thing some African countries have to put themselves on their feet. There’s a good argument to say that the whole food miles debate is just another form of protectionism. Me? I reckon being aware of just how far a green bean has travelled isn’t a bad thing.
Of course the key word in the article is “considering”. As Tony Blair’s reign comes to a messy end, we’re in the cones hotline phase of New Labour. People are saying a lot of things just to get our attention right now, and I suspect that, frankly, a lot of gasses are being created without moving a single aubergine.
