Plastic bags mount up
 
There's an excellent article by Jonathan Watts and Jess Cartner-Morley on the complex economy of the humble plastic bag in The Guardian
"The apparent intractability of the plastic bag problem is all the more remarkable considering that our dependency on them is a recent phenomenon. Polythene was not even invented until the 30s, and plastic bags did not become common in supermarkets until the 70s. The idea that we can't live without them is a very modern one."
 
Maybe we're weaning ourselves off our plastic bag habits. Posh people certainly are. Keira Knightly has made Anya Hindmarsh's "I'm Not A Plastic Bag" bags de rigeur.
 
So how come every time supermarkets like Sainsburys, Tesco, Asda and Waitrose do home deliveries they STILL bring the shopping in a mountain of plastic bags? Fair drives you nuts.
