What types of fat can I use?

Birds need large amounts of saturated fat like raw suet and lard, as the high energy content is vital to help them keep warm, especially during winter.

Lard and beef suet are great for making bird fat balls.

Don't use fat from cooking as it may be blended with meat juices which gives it a consistency that it can smear onto birds feathers. High salt levels and bacteria can also be a problem.

Don't use polyunsaturated margarine or vegetable oils, they can also smear onto feathers and make them less insulating and waterproof.
